Ariel Sharon said he would not resign after his Likud Party rejected his plan for unilateral Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. But Labor Party head Shimon Peres, leader of the opposition, called for new elections after Likud members decisively rejected the prime minister’s plan in a referendum Sunday.
