Ariel Sharon said his plan to evacuate most Gaza Strip settlements is crucial for Israel’s security. “I reached the conclusion as someone bearing responsibility for Israel’s maximum security on his shoulders,” the Israeli prime minister said Tuesday during a visit to Ashkelon, the nearest Israeli city to the Gaza boundary. “This pains me more than anyone else,” added Sharon, a longtime champion of the settlement movement.
