Ariel Sharon vowed to make every effort to maintain Israel’s hold on part of the West Bank. Speaking to the Jerusalem Post on Thursday, the Israeli prime minister described the looming Gaza Strip withdrawal as a strategic necessity and suggested it would relieve pressure on Israel to quit extensive areas of the West Bank.
