That directions be given to the thirty-eight Protestant Home Missions Boards, acting on the statement adopted at the Home Missions Council in its recent session in Atlantic City, that Jewish children shall not be admitted into any of the Christian institutions under the auspices of these boards without the consent and approval of the parents, was requested in a letter to the Rev. William R. King, executive secretary of the Council, by Dr. Israel Goldstein, Rabbi of Congregation B’nai Jeshurun, New York City.
Dr. Goldstein addressed the Atlantic City session of the Council, pleading for a cessation of proselytizing activities among Jews. The Council, in a statement adopted following Dr. Goldstein’s address, asserted its right to conduct missionary propaganda, but deemed it advisable that “when little children from Jewish families come to our churches, Sunday schools and our neighborhood houses, we believe it is desirable that they should come with the consent and approval of their parents.”
It was on the basis of this statement that Dr. Goldstein asked the instructions be sent to the institutions affiliated with the Missions Council.
