Increased interest in Jewish communal life in this city is reflected in the various activities being sponsored here during March.
As a feature of “Young Judaea Month” now being observed throughout the South, young Judaeans from Birmingham, Macon, and other surrounding cities will assemble here Sunday for intercity debating and athletic contests. The Atlanta program for the month was inaugurated on February 25, with a radio broadcast over station WSB, and included a rally last Sunday afternoon, followed by a leaders’ dinner and dance in the evening, and the observance of national young Judaea sabbath last Friday evening at the Shearith Israel Synagogue.
Purim in Atlanta was celebrated by the United Hebrew School, a public institution, the Shearith Israel Synagogue, and the Spanish Jewish Community.
The arrival in Atlanta of Helen Schulman, girls’ worker of Louisville, Ky., and Barney Medintz, boys’ workers and athletic director from Chicago, youth activities at the Jewish Educational Alliance were stimulated. Girl scout troups, sewing, and dancing classes, as well as various study groups have been organized. An all star basketball game was sponsored Thursday by the boys’ club council to raise funds for furnishing a men’s clubroom.
The Atlanta section of the Council of Jewish Women is establishing a children’s dental clinic as a special division of the Non-Sectarian Morris Hirsch Clinic operated by the Federation of Jewish Charities. Friday evening services conducted in English by Rabbi Harry H. Epstein and a choir of twelve trained voices at the Ahavath Achim Synagogue are filling a vital need among the younger Jewish element of this city.
