Austrian Jewish publishers and editors today became a target for the Schuschnigg government when a decree was issued requiring special licenses for all newspapers. The new licenses require all publishers to state their religion.
All newspapers in the country, even those in existence for many years, must now obtain special licenses. The old forms, which merely required that the publisher prove himself of good character, have been withdrawn. The new application demand to know the religion and origin of the publishers.
In Jewish circles here, the government decree is regarded as a direct blow against the Jewish publishers and editors on the general daily newspapers owing to the avowed aim of Chancellor Schuschnigg’s regime to oust them from the general press.
