The Austrian authorities today burned the entire library of the Jewish Socialist Zionist (Poale-Zion) party, which was confiscated during the Socialist uprising in Vienna in February, 1934.
The library contained important cultural workers and a number of unique publications. Jewish leaders had made an effort to obtain the books from the authorities for the Jewish Community Library. The effort, however, was not successful.
It was stated here today that the blaze was set in defiance of the police authorities. It has not been established whether the highest government officials knew about the bonfire of the Jewish books.
The Deutsche Volksblatt, a Nazi publication in Austria, came out today with a renewed campaign against the Jews, and with slogans to boycott Jewish stores. Despite the reports that Nazi papers will not be permitted in Austria, the Deutsche Volksblatt conducts its anti-Jewish campaign freely and urges Christians to make their purchases in “Aryan” shops only.
The Reichspost, official organ of the clerical section of the Government Party, publishes an editorial in which it draws the attention of the Nazi government to the fact that “National Socialism originally developed without hindrances in Austria.”
