Austria today extended de facto recognition to the Government of Israel, becoming the 46th nation to do so. Kurt Lewin, Israeli representative here, will shortly leave for Tel Aviv to discuss the problem of establishing an Israeli consulate in the Austrian capital.

One thousand Jewish DP’s today left the American zone of Austria for Naples route to Israel. The party included a number of men between the ages of 18 and 45, and thus became the first transport of Jewish refugees of military age to leave for Israel since the lifting of the U.S. Army ban on the emigration of Jews of military age.
