The French Government was not consulted by the British Government before the latter lifted its embargo against the sale and shipment of arms to Egypt, it was revealed here by a spokesman for the French Foreign Office. France is one of the signatories of the tripartite declaration which guarantees the borders of Israel and the Arab states against aggression.
The spokesman said that in view of the British development other powers can consider themselves free to furnish arms to other countries of the Middle East. He viewed the British ending of the embargo as a development resulting from the Anglo-Egyptian agreement on evacuation of the Suez, and as a factor which might upset the balance in the Middle East.
