British Foreign Office sources expressed the hope today that overflights of Israel territory will shortly be resumed, either in their initial form or with a temporary authorization from Israel for United States planes to supply the British forces based on Amman. The view was held here that it was contrary to Israel’s interests that Jordan be allowed to be isolated.
These same sources hold out the possibility that unless this form of supply from Cyprus is resumed, the British troops will have to be withdrawn from Jordan for logistic reasons. They note that with the closing of the Jordan-Syrian frontier, Jordan has virtually been isolated, with but one outlet to the world at large–the port of Akaba. Meanwhile, it has been reported here that American experts are in Jordan investigating the possibility of improving road and rail transport from the busy small port to Amman.
