Restoration of the ” full status of human dignity” to the Jewish people as part of the post-war settlement as well as provisions for the emigration of Jews who cannot find homes in Europe after the war, was urged upon the Allied governments today in a resolution passed at a special conference on “Jewry’s post-war position” held here by the Presbyterian churches of Britain and Ireland.
The resolution declares that the conference, after considering the position of Jews in post-war reconstruction “deplores any denial to persons of Jewish descent of the right to equal treatment before the law and the rights due their status as ordinary citizens.” It urges that all governments “take immediate steps to restore the full status of human dignity to such Jewish people as have been deprived of it, particularly that all legislation unjustly diminishing the rights of Jews as such shall be repealed at an early date.” It concludes by urging “His Majesty’s Government, in conjunction with other of the Allied and friendly nations, to provide some scheme for the emigration of Jews who cannot find a home in Europe.”
Rev. W. Gauld, opening the conference, declared that the Churches of the world can no longer afford to ignore the Jewish problem. “Hitler has definitely put the question of the Jews on the agenda of the world’s business,” Rev. Gauld declared. Rev. R. Clephane Macanna, speaking on the problem of securing political rights for Jews, warned that peace would not bring an end to racial discrimination and pointed out that the Jews of Europe are “economically dead” and that the positions which have been taken from them will not be lightly given up.
