Sen. Harry P. Cain of Washington, a member of the ## committee on DP’s and the I.R.C., today proposed that the United Nations set a deadline for the liquidation of the DP camps.
In an interview with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Sen. Cain advocated that the U.N. make a definite statement as to whether the displaced Jews will be permitted to go to Palestine because “nine out of ten Jewish DP’s want to go there.”
The I.R.O. Preparatory Commission yesterday turned over to the Joint Distribution Committee $350,000 which it had received from the Swedish Government. This is the first payment made by the Swedish Government under an agreement to transfer $3,500,000 to the I.R.O. from German assets frozen in Sweden.
An international reparations commission meeting in Paris December, 1945, decided to turn this sum plus approximately $11,500,000 similarly frozen in Switzerland to Jewish voluntary relief agencies. Subsequently, it was decided to transfer these funds to the J.D.C. and the Jewish Agency for relief, rehabilitation and resettlement programs.
I.R.O. Officials announced that there would be a further distribution of funds attained from Sweden as soon as difficulties relating to the conversion of the Swedish ## into other forms of currency are ironed out. Meanwhile, only $17,000 was given to any other agency than the J.D.C. It went to the International Rescue and Relief Committee.
