A number of representative organizations of Cambridge University have published a letter in the Manchester Guardian, protesting against the anti-Semitic policy of the German Government.
“In the universities of Germany a double test of race and political opinion is being imposed,” the letter says. “The list of professors and lecturers excluded from their work by this twofold tyranny increases day by day. Men who have won the respect of the civilized world both for themselves and for Germany have been dismissed merely because they are Jews or because their political opinions do not conform with those of the Government in power. Even a ‘numerus clausus’ restricting entry to the schools and universities has been suggested.
“This policy is contrary to the best ideals of a university, to those ideals which have hitherto made the German universities such great centers of culture. We deplore a situation in which learning and science are being sacrificed not because of the inevitable disorders or irresponsibilities of a ‘revolution’ but because of a deliberate policy of racial and political bigotry.
“We appeal to the Government and to the authorities of the German universities to reverse this policy, involving destruction of intellectual freedom and of their heritage of learning.”
