Josef Rosenblatt, noted American cantor, died here yesterday of heart attack and apoplexy.
He had been active all day Sunday, visiting the Wailing Wall, the Dead Sea and the River Jordan, in which he bathed, while the American-Palestine Fox Film Company was making the last shots of a film in which he was starring. The film was completed.
While on his visit to Palestine, Cantor Rosenblatt gave several concerts on behalf of Russian Jewry. He was accompanied here by his wife and son, Henry.
Cantor Rosenblatt who was 51 years old, was born in Bialaceirkov, Russia, on May 9, 1882. He was the tenth child of a cantor in a small Russian congregation. The family was expelled from Russia on twenty-four hours’ notice when Josef was 9 years old, and he then began his career in Austria, singing in synagogues.
In Cracow, at the age of 18, he met Taube Kaufmann, who later became his wife. They had five sons and three daughters. The eldest son, Samuel, is a Rabbi and a professor at Johns Hopkins University.
In 1913 Cantor Rosenblatt came to the United States, as cantor of the First Hungarian Congregation, Ohab Zedek, New York City, where he remained until 1922.
Cantor Rosenblatt was the author of more than 400 compositions.
