How Jews aided persecuted Catholics in Germany and Austria is outlined in an article by Rabbi David Philipson in yesterday’s Catholic Telegraphic, principal newspaper organ of the Catholics here.
A Jewish statesman, the article states, was the only Reichstag deputy who dared vote against the May Laws which suppressed the Jesuits. Heinrich Heine often bitterly attacked persecutors of the Catholics, Rabbi Philipson writes.
“Jesuits,” the article says, “having aroused the wrath of incensed Bohemians at the beginning of the Thirty Years War, were saved from certain death by a Jew, Lazarus Aron of Liechtenstadt.”
