Officials of the Congress for Racial Equality contended that the phrase “gilded ghetto” on signs by pickets at the Mather High School were meant to refer to the fact that the school was a “white ghetto” and not to the Jewish make-up of the student population. About 95 per cent of the students are Jewish, the Sentinel, English-Jewish publication, reported.
The pickets also carried signs asking for an “end to segregation.” The nearest non-White high school is several miles away. Students at Mather High said they would not object to admission of Negroes but many added they felt the picketing at the school was “foolish” because there are no Negroes living in the school neighborhood.
