Declaring that the battle against Nazism was fought not only at such places as Dunkirk, Stalingrad and El Alamein, but in the death camps at Treblinka, Maidanek and Buchenwald, Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog of Palestine, in a New Year’s message, today appealed to the Jews of the world not to forget “our brethren wandering by the ash heaps of the remains of a third of Israel.”
He called on Jews everywhere to meet “this greatest crisis of our martyred people” by banishing all dissension so that they “may prove equal to the massive, unprecedented tasks” of physical and spiritual rehabilitation. Rabbi Herzog expressed the hope that the coming year would see an end to the wandering of the Jewish people and the return of the homeless Jews in Europe to the traditional Jewish homeland.
