The Eisenhower Administration was urged this week-end to “press for the conclusion of peace negotiations between Israel and the Arab states in order that we might move more rapidly toward a strong Middle East mutual defense arrangement that will include Israel.”
In an open letter to President Eisenhower published in the New York press, Dean Alfange, chairman of the American Christian Palestine Committee of Greater New York, congratulated President Eisenhower on his Middle East policy statement at the American Jewish Tercentenary dinner and credited the Administration for having used its good offices to bring about the German reparations pact with Israel; having reaffirmed the tripartite declaration; having sent Eric Johnston to the Near East to seek a solution of the water resources problem, and supporting Israel in the Security Council in matters referring to the Arab states.
Speaking to a New Jersey State Conference of the Jewish National Fund, Dr. Harris J. Levine, JNF president, today criticized Secretary of State John Foster Dulles for his silence on the memorandum handed him by a delegation composed of the heads of 16 national Jewish organizations, urging the stoppage of the shipment of American arms to the Arab states. Stating that Mr. Dulles’ silence “will be like a thunderbolt in the ears of all friends of Israel in the United States,” Dr. Levine called upon the State Department to make its reply before Election Day.
