The “Detroit Jewish Chronicle” in its current issue publishes an editorial devoted to the interview with David A. Brown by the Polish Telegraphic Agency in which Mr. Brown is made the authority for the statement that no specific misery exists among Polish Jewry.
The “Chronicle” editorial calls the situation which presents itself as incredible in view of the fact that Mr. Brown was previously at the helm of the fund-raising effort which broadcast the cries of despair from Poland.
“The protest against the interview given by David A. Brown to the Polish Telegraphic Agency presents an incredible situation,” the editorial says.
“Since the war, news agencies and spokesmen for all parties in Poland, as well as visitors to Poland have agreed that the position of the Jews in Poland is a horribly depressing one. Mr. Brown’s statement to the Polish newsgathering agency not only belittles these reports, but brands as lies the description of poverty and oppression in Polish Jewry.
“For year Mr. Brown was at the helm of fund-raising groups who broadcast the cries of despair that emanated from Poland.
“The blackest pictures were drawn by the propagandists who worked under him. How is it possible that he should now proclaim to the world that these were exaggeration! Is it possible that he was misquoted by Polish newspapermen? No one doubts the statements that continue to come from the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, the Joint Distribution Committee, the American Jewish Congress and other groups relative to the despairing position of the Jews of Poland. Is it possible that Mr. Brown was wronged in the quotations of Polish newspapermen? We await his reply with great interest in order that the situation may be thoroughly clarified.”
The “American Hebrew” in its current issue refers to the Polish Telegraphic Agency interview with Mr. Brown and states that since Mr. Brown is now in the Orient, it can make no reply in his behalf.
It points out its belief, however, that Mr. Brown must have been misquoted inasmuch as the Polish Telegraphic Agency interview credits Mr. Brown with statements concerning the plight of Polish Jewry, which are contradictory to what Mr. Brown says in the articles which he has been writing for the “American Hebrew.”
