The Jewish Welfare Fund Appeal opened officially here with a dinner-meeting, at which 11,364 pledges totaling $3, 879,249 were reported, highest amount pledged at such an event, This total represented 64 per cent of the record campaign of $6, 061, 000.
Presiding at the meeting was Arthur Dery, general chairman. Guest speaker was Dr. William Haber, dean of the University of Michigan’s College of Literature, Science and the Arts. Terming the Jewish Welfare Fund and similar organizations in communities throughout the country a version of the Marshall Plan, he declared that their work had revived European Jewish life, which was developing a new crop of Jewish leaders.
Henry J. Goodman received the annual Edward M. Baker Young Leadership Award presented by The Jewish Community Federation. The campaign will close at a dinner-meeting on May 14.
