Aiming to establish in New York a permanent theatre presenting fine drama of popular prices, the Theatre Alliance will open a season of forty weeks next September with tickets selling at $1.50 top.
The alliance is working on the principle that the audience is an integral part of the theatre organization. With this in mind, it will include audience representation in its executive board.
A company is being welded together which includes Sam Jaffe, Lester Vail, Richard Whorf, Harry Bellaver, Beulah Bondi and Katherine Emmet. A number of other actors will be engaged when production work begins.
Elmer Rice is listed among the playwrights whose works will be staged. Others are James Light, Philip Loeb, Benno Schneider and Halsted Wells.
The statement of the alliance’s objectives includes the development of native American drama, creation of an organization to provide security for those who work in the theatre, development of individual ability and the eventual establishment of a children’s theatre.
Five plays will be presented in the Fall, including two new works by American authors, two revivals of American plays and one European play.
To lend stability to the theatre, the alliance intends to enlist theatre-goers in an organized audience.
