A ten per cent increase in the wages of men and women employed in the men’s clothing industry was recommended by Attorney Nathan Gordon, chairman of a board of conciliation which arbitrated the dispute between the Amalgamated Clothing Workers Union and the local manufacturers. More than 4,000 workers were affected by the strike.
The arbitrators’ report pointed out that owing to the removal of manufacturers to small towns near Montreal in search of cheap labor, conditions in the clothing industry have become chaotic. The board recommended that wages in the industry be standardized and given legal sanction. Practically all workers affected are Jewish.
