Beth Moses Hospital, also affiliated with the Federation, gave forty per cent free ward treatment, while the East New York Dispensary gave service to about 14,000 persons.

The educational program of Federation supervised the training of about 5,000 pupils, half of whom received free tutelage. The five affiliated societies of the Federation Community Center division include the Hebrew Educational Society, the Jewish Community House of Bensonhurst, the Y.M.H.A. of Boro Park, the Y.M.H.A. of Brooklyn and the Y.M.H.A. of Williamsburg. The Federation’s allotment to these institutions, which are not entirely selfsupporting, totalled about $40,000. In addition, considerable financial assistance was given to the Brooklyn Hebrew Orphan Asylum and the Brooklyn Hebrew Day Nursery.

The work of the Federation was supplemented by the active cooperation of the Junior Federation and the Women’s Division. Past presidents of the Federation include Nathan S. Jonas, Major Benjamin H. Namm, Justice Edward Lazansky, Judge Alexander H. Geismar, Nathan D. Shapiro, Aaron William Levy and Supreme Court Justice Mitchell May, incumbent. This past year more than 1,100 persons attended the annual banquet of the Brooklyn Federation at the Hotel St. George, held on November 13. About $50,000 was realized.

The officers are as follows: Justice Mitchell May, president; Harry M. Marks, Walter N. Rothschild, Mrs. William Linder, vice-presidents; Joseph M. May, treasurer; Benjamin C. Ribman, Murry C. Becker, assistant treasurers; Mrs. Nathan L. Goldstein, secretary; Max Abelman, Ralph K. Jacobs, assistant secretaries; Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, executive director. The following are constituent agencies of the Federation: Beth Moses Hospital and Women’s Auxiliary, Council Home for Jewish Girls, Council of Jewish Women for Immigration Aid, the East New York Dispensary, the First Hebrew Day Nursery and Neighborhood House, the Glory of Israel Hebrew Institute, the Hebrew Education Society, the Hebrew Free Loan Association, the Hebrew Free School of Brownsville, the Hebrew National School, the Hebrew Orphan Asylum, the Jewish Community House of Bensonhurst, the Jewish Hospital, the Jewish Hospital Training School, Jewish Hospital Women’s Auxiliary, the Jewish Social Service Bureau, the Machzike Talmud Torah, the New Hebrew School of Brooklyn, the United Jewish Aid Societies, the Y.M.H.A.’s of Boro Park, Brooklyn and Williamsburg. President of the Junior Federation is Irving P. Katrell. President of the Women’s Division is Mrs. Clarence Bachrach.

AMONG BOROUGH’S CONGREGATIONS

Local congregations which have reported preparing for fall activities include Congregation Baith Israel Anshei Emes, Israel Goldfarb, rabbi; Temple Shaari Zedek, Harry Weiss, rabbi; the Ocean Parkway Jewish Center, Jacob Bosniak, rabbi; Temple Emanu-El, Moses J. S. Abels, rabbi; Jewish Communal Center of Flatbush, Maxwell L. Sacks, rabbi; Marine Park Jewish Center.

The program of activities of Union Temple, of which Dr. Sidney S. Tedesche is rabbi, will include cultural, religious and philanthropic work. The Men’s Club, headed by Alvin S. Rosenson; the Sisterhood, headed by Mrs. Hattie Newman; the Junior League, headed by A. Ralph Kartzman and the Young Folks’ League, of which Arthur Strauss is the president, comprise the major organizations of the Temple. The large attendance at Dr. Tedesche’s sermons each Friday evening will, according to the Temple directors, facilitate the drive for new members.

Plans for the new proposed Temple on adjoining land to the present building are still in abeyance. It was said that the work of raising funds will begin in the near future. Dr. Tedesche announced that because of the large demand for tickets for the Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah, September 20 and 21, and Yom Kippur, September 29 and 30, services will be held in the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Lafayette Avenue and Ashland Place. Assisting Dr. Tedesche in the services will be Rabbi Emeritus Simon R. Cohen and a choir under the direction of Cantor Leon Kourcik.
