The American Jewish Congress announced today that its administrative committee has decided to change the form of its plebiscite next month, substituting a general question for the four questions, as was reported by the JTA on Friday. The change was precipitated, the announcement said, “by the increasing crises in Jewish life and the urgency of uniting all Jewish resources for the protection of the Jewish status.”
The new question follows: “Do you favor a union of all American Jewish groups engaged in safeguarding the equal rights of Jews, which shall undertake to create for the defense of such rights a single all-inclusive agency organized on a democratic, representative basis in accordance with American ideals?”
At the concluding session of the fortieth anniversary convention of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, a resolution urging the congress to withdraw the plebiscite entirely was sent back to committee to be reframed.
