The 14th annual convention of the American Association of English-Jewish Newspapers concludes here yesterday with the adoption of a number of important resolutions and the election of Abraham Slabot, publisher of the “Jewish Ledger of New Orleans, as president. Mr. Slabot succeeds Jacques Back publisher of The Observer” of Nashville, Tenn.
In a resolution on Israel, the convention pledged “whole-hearted support to the Jewish State in this hour of her peril.” The resolution also congratulated the leaders of Israel for their unremitting search for a just and durable peace in the Middle East.” In another resolution the convention congratulated Dag Hammarskjold, Secretary General of the United Nations on his success. “in attaining cease-fire agreements” between Israel and her Arab neighbors and urged that the United Nations official continue his mission “for the purpose of attaining a real peace in the Middle East.”
The delegates adopted a resolution extending greetings to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency as a vital and effective partner in the task of creating a stronger Jewish press in America.” They condemned the activities of the American Council for Judaism, an anti-Zionist organization, as “destructive” and damaging to relationship of American Jews to their neighbors.
J.L. Fishbein, publisher of the Sentinel of Chicago and Morris Janoff, publisher of the Jewish Standard of Jersey City, N.J., were elected vice-presidents. Arthur Weyne, publisher of the Atlantic City (N.J.) Record,” was re-elected a vice president, Jimmy Wisch, publisher of the “Texas Jewish Post,” of Fort Worth, was elected secretary Adolph Rosenberg, publisher of the “Southern Israelite” of Atlanta, Georgia was named treasurer.
Elected as members of the executive committee were Myer Keleman, general manager of the B’nai B’rith Messenger” of Lost Angeles, California; Leo H. Frisch, publisher of The American Jewish World” of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota; Joseph Weisberg, publisher of “The Jewish Advocate” of Boston, Massachusetts. Albert W. Golomb, publisher of the “American Jewish Outlook” of Pittsburgh, Pa., Jules Miller, publisher of The Exponent” of Philadelphia. Pa Elias R. Jacobs, publisher of the “Buffalo Jewish Review. New York Philip Slomovitz, publisher of “The Jewish News” of Detroit, Michigan, and Fred K. Schochet, publisher of the “Jewish Floridian” of Miami, Florida.
