For allegedly inflicting an injury on a Polish drunkard who attacked them in the street, two Wilno Jewish businessmen, Victor Chelem and Herz Machtel, were today sentenced by the local Court of Appeals to one year in prison.

During the trial the prosecutor delivered a speech replete with anti-Semitic barbs. The assault by the Jewish merchants on the Pole, he said, is an indication of the insolence of the “chosen people.”
