Paul Berman, editor of the Danziger Echo, Jewish weekly, was today deported to Poland by the authorities for having written two allegedly anti-Nazi articles. Berman had originally been sentenced to four months in prison, but the sentence was changed to deportation upon intervention by the Police High Commissioner for Danzig, Dr. Casimir Papee.
While the editor was being deported, the police confiscated the latest issue of the Echo, only Jewish publication in the Free City, for using expressions like “Jewish persecutions and anti-Jewish agitation by Germany.” The confiscation order pointed out that the Danzig Senate (which is controlled by Nazis) had decided that Jews were not being persecuted in Germany.
