Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan received U.S. Ambassador Samuel Lewis here this morning for a discussion of yesterday’s Cabinet response to the American questions on the future status of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. No details of their one-hour meeting were disclosed. Lewis told reporters, on leaving, that the discussion was “very helpful and useful.” He said Dayan had helped clarify and explain the significance of a number of the phrases and provisions in the Cabinet’s formulation.

The American envoy said it was too early to say what the reaction would be in Washington, adding that further contacts between the parties concerned should precede such reaction. (A State Department spokesman said yesterday that the U.S. would continue to consult with both Israel and Egypt but “at this stage we are not going to characterize either the Israeli response or the Egyptian views.”)
