Rioting in Jaffa, attacks on Jews and a battle between Arabs and British troops raised the three-day death toll in Palestine to 43.
One Arab was killed and six others were wounded, one of them dangerously, when police fired yesterday into a crowd attempting to loot and set fire to the Carmel-Mizrachi wine stores in Jaffa, where 23 Arabs were killed Friday in a vegetable market bomb explosion. Tension was unabated in the Arab port city despite the presence of large detachments of Government forces.
A large band, it was announced today, Friday afternoon heavily fired upon a military convoy north of Tulkarem, bringing to the spot troop reinforcements and three royal Air Force planes which engaged the band, killing eleven of its members. One of the planes crashed in making a forced landing, killing both of its occupants.
One Jewish auxiliary policeman was killed today and another was seriously wounded. The two, who were riding in an Arab’s automobile, were fired upon near Gan Yavneh from an on coming Arab car. The dead policeman was not immediately identified. The wounded one is Hanoch Lebluch, 26, an immigrant from Germany.
A Jewish watchman, Abraham Biton, 40, was killed when he was attacked at the Tel Haim settlement of Oriental Jews in the vicinity of Tel Aviv. The Government announced that troops have in the past week dynamited 120 houses in the Arab village of Shaab , near Acre, where a British officer was killed by a land mine.
