Deportation proceedings began Thursday against an alleged Nazi SS guard who has lived in New York for almost 50 years. The Department of Justice’s Office of Special Investigations maintains that 84-year-old Michael Gruber, a Croatian native and Austrian citizen, should be deported for lying about his activities as a guard at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp between 1942 and 1944. The government is expected to rest its case by Friday afternoon.
