The dispute between Israel and Syria over the continuation of the Huleh drainage project has taken a “dangerous” turn, which may bring it back to the United Nations Security Council for decision, Gen. William Hiley, U.N.-Palestine Truce Supervisor, informed the United Nations today.
Gen. Hiley reported that a group of Arab land-owners, representing the owners of 95 per cent of the Arab land required for the proposed channel for the Jordan river under the drainage project, had unanimously rejected any proposal for the rental or sale of their land, or the exchange of it for any other land, so that the project could continue. According to Gen. Riley’s message, there is little prospect of a suitable solution arranged through the Mixed Armistice Commission, and this means that the parties might have to have recourse again to the U.N. Security Council.
