Dr. Binjamin Eliav, newly appointed Consul General of Israel in New York, arrived here this weekend to assume his duties. Dr. Eliav succeeds with Simcha Pratt who returned to Israel earlier this month after serving as consul general in New York for two and one-half years.
Dr. Eliav was born in Latvia in 1909 and came to Palestine in 1925. He received his education in the Universities of Berlin, Paris and Vienna. The Consul General began his diplomatic career in 1953 as First Secretary to the Israel Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The new consul general will make one of his first public appearances at City Hall tomorrow, the day proclaimed by Mayor Robert F. Wagner as “Israel Independence Day in New York City.” Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, Mayor Wagner, City Council president Abe Stark and other State and City officials will participate in the celebration of the twelfth anniversary of Israel’s Independence.
