Dr. Krass Pays Tribute to Philanthropist, Joseph L. Buttenwieser

Tribute was paid to Joseph L. Buttenwieser, President of the Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies, for his philanthropic activities, by Dr. Nathan Krass, Rabbi of Temple Emanu-El. The occasion was a dinner in honor of Mr. Butterwieser at the Hotel Pennsylvania, last Sunday, at which one thousand people attended. The work of the Federation was described and its prospects for the coming year, and speeches were also made by Senator Simeon D. Fess of Ohio and Assistant Secretary of the Navy Roosevelt.

Dr. Krass, speaking of the modern method in which charities are administered, and appealing for the recognition of the human angle, stated: “We must make all our workers realize that they are not merely agents gathering shekels, but that the collection of money is only a material means to help a suffering brother out of the depths of despair. By properly motivating our appeal and by properly envisaging our philanthropic institutions, we can stir up millions of our fellow Jews, who would otherwise remain callous to the call of mere machinery.”
