Gigantic experiments which will determine whether Einstein’s theory of relativity is right or wrong are now under way by Dr. A. A. Michaelson, the great American Jewish scientist, and Dr. Henry G. Gale of the University of Chicago.
The experiments will center around the main point of Einstein’s theory and will determine whether it is correct that the speed of light is influenced by the ether. Special instruments, invented by Dr. Michaelson, will be employed in the test, which will take place in a month on the prairie near Clearing, outside of Chicago.
A ray of light will be released to race south, west, north and east, from mirror surface to mirror surface through a vacuum in a tube. The same ray, reflected by different mirrors, will race around the same airtight circuit for about a mile and a quarter in the opposite direction. Dr. Michaelson will judge the speed of the ray.
The University of Chicago has appropriated $12,000 for the experiment. Great interest in the outcome of the test is displayed in scientific circles in various countries.
