Chief Rabbi Dr. Angelo Sacerdoti, the spokesman of the Jewish community of Italy, a personal friend of King Victor Emmanuel III. and of Premier Mussolini, died suddenly here today. He was one of the organizers of the World Jewish Congress and held the rabbinate in Italy for twenty-eight years.
Extensive preparations are being made here for Dr. Sacerdoti’s funeral, which will take place tomorrow. Representatives of all Jewish communities in Italy will be appointed to participate in the services.
FAMILY AIDED KINGS
Chief Rabbi Sacerdoti was a member of one of the oldest Italian learned families. Several members of his family distinguished themselves in government service under different kings. Theodore Sacerdoti, one of his grandparents, was the personal physician of Pope Julius III, in the sixteenth century. Another member of the family, Vittorio Sacerdoti, was Italian Ambassador in several European countries and represented the Italian government in North America in 1927 and 1928.
Dr. Sacerdoti contributed much to lift the Jewish communities in Italy to their present status. He was especially outspoken against mixed marriages, which are assuming an important character in Italy. He has kept Mussolini interested in the acute problems which the Jews are now facing in various
