The Jewish children of Poland and the Basque children of Spain were linked today as both suffering because of “men who want to be dictators” in an address by the Duchess of Atholl.
The Duchess condemned persecution of Jews in Poland at a luncheon of the Leeds Ladies’ Committee for Aid for Polish Children. The relief campaign is headed by Prof. Selig Brodetsky.
“The Jewish children of Poland and the Basque children of Spain are hit not by an act of God, but by men who want to be dictators,” she declared. “We could not have the same complaints against the treatment of Jews of Czarist Russia and in Poland. Czarist Russia was backward, but Poland claims to be civilized, especially in view of the rights of minorities which Poland undertook to safeguard after the war.”
The Duchess expressed the opinion that Britain had obligations to the Polish Jews since she was one of the parties to the Polish minorities treaties.
The collection of Leeds brought $5,000 for the fund.
