The Jewish-populated Henry Street here, located in New York’s East Side, was officially renamed Eddie Cantor Street today in honor of the Jewish actor who celebrates his 60th birthday this week. Mr. Cantor was born and raised in Henry Street.
Mayor Vincent Impellitteri, congratulating Mr. Cantor at City Hall, emphasized his services to various Jewish and non-Jewish philanthropic causes and the summer camp which he maintains for children of poor families. He also cited his contributions during the war in helping in the sale of war bonds as well as in amusing American service men on the various battle fronts and in hospitals.
More than 1,500 notables will pay tribute to Mr. Cantor at a birthday dinner at the Hotel Commodore here on Thursday arranged by the organization which is conducting the sale of Israel bonds. The guests will pay $1,000 per plate. The affair marks Mr. Cantor’s devotion to his efforts in aiding Israel in its struggle for economic independence.
