The Rector of the University of Cologne, acting upon orders from the Minister of Education, today withdrew his instructions to members of the faculty, according to which all American Jewish students seeking to enter the class rooms were to be told there was no room left.

The order of the Minister of Education applies to American Jewish students who were permitted to register at the University but who were refused places when they arrived in the class rooms.

This attitude on the part of the Rector aroused widespread comment and criticism from other University heads and from Jewish organizations, particularly in view of the generous support accorded German educational institutions by American Jews.

The Minister of Education today expressed to the Central Union of German Citizens of the Jewish Faith his deep regret and his sense of indignation at the discrimination practiced at the University of Cologne.

The Rector of the University of Cologne based his order of exclusion on a decree of the Ministry of Education, limiting the places to new students.

The Minister of Education expressed a desire to have American students give preference to small Universities instead of to Cologne, Bonn and Heidelberg, whose facilities are already overcrowded.

There are two hundred American Jewish students in Germany, it is learned.
