The Egyptian Secretary of State, Hamed Zaki Bey, who is en route to Florence to attend the current session of UNESCO, told a news conference here today that “understanding between the Arab countries and Israel, realistically conceived and elaborated, is not only possible, but would be mutually advantageous.”

The Egyptian official voiced the opinion that one of the chief obstacles to Middle East stability is the British attitude towards Egypt. He said that Britain wants Egypt and other Arab states to make peace with Israel before discussing British-Arab relations, while Egypt desires a settlement of the Sudan and Suez Canal problems before taking up the question of a settlement with the Jewish state.
