State Department sources revealed today that a White House statement is expected shortly, in which President Eisenhower will announce the appointment of Henry A. Byroade as new Ambassador to Egypt.
Mr. Byroade is now Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs. His assignment to Egypt would be aimed at implementing a policy decision made here to strengthen Egypt militarily as quickly as possible, owing to the imminent withdrawal of British forces from the Suez Canal area.
Mr. Byroade will have the mission of fostering improvement of American relations with the Arab League, with a view to creating a Middle East command of Arab states linked to NATO, in order to defend the Near East from Communist penetration. State Department sources said that inclusion of Israel in such a pact is not contemplated, because the Arabs would not agree to cooperate with Israel.
