The executive committee of the Jewish National Council (Vaad Leumi) declared today to hold elections as soon as possible for the Jewish National Assembly (Asefath Hanivcharim)–highest governing body of the Palestine Jews–following resignation of Council President Pinchas Rutenberg in protest against what he called factionalism in the Jewish community.
The Hebrew press devoted considerable attention to Rutenberg’s resignation. Haaretz declared editorially that the resignation marked the failure of the Jewish community’s first attempt to conduct its affairs on non-partisan principles. The laborite Davar blamed “certain personalities.” Haboker openly blamed “the leading party”–meaning the laborites–for Rutenberg’s failure.
