In the first six months of 1947 the enrollment in ORT schools throughout Europe jumped by 51 percent, with the number of students in Germany and Austria almost doubling, Louis J. Wolinsky, director of ORT operations in the latter countries, reported today.
Mr. Wolinsky, who has just returned from Germany where he visited briefly, told a press conference that 3,000 persons have already been graduated from ORT schools in Germany and Austria, and an additional 8,000 are now studying in 65 training centers, where they are acquiring a variety of skills. It is expected that more than 10,000 DP’s will have been trained in ORT schools by the end of this year. Most of the students range in age from 14 to 30 years.
“The scope of the operations may be judged by the fact that an order for $350,000 worth of supplies for Germany and Austria, largely for materials to be expended during the balance of the year, has just been placed,” Mr. Wolinsky said. “This will augment the tremendous volume of supplies and machine equipment already brought into the ORT schools in Germany and Austria from other countries.”
