Eliahu Epstein, Israeli envoy to the United States, yesterday officially accepted a “Friendship Train for Israel” bearing $500,000 worth of food, clothing, medical supplies and automotive equipment. The train was presented by the Chicago B’nai B’rith. Earlier, during an official welcome at City Hall. Epstein charged Count Folke Bernadotte’s recommendations on cease-fire terms in Palestine as a departure from the original truce terms. “We suggest,” Epstein said, “that Count Bernadotte follow the original decision, including no limitations to be made on immigration,” The Arabs “are going against the whole letter and spirit of the original truce terms by inserting conditions in the new agreements,” he said. He also warned that those conditions might “be only another way to torpedo the truce” and added that if the truce failed, it would be the Arabs’ responsibility. The Jews, Epstein declared, had accepted the truce without strings.
