A fast day as a cure for the evils of high taxes was the measure resorted to
by a group of merchants in the city of Krasnystaw, District of Lublin.
In an effort to stablize Polish currency, the Polish Government has introduced a severe system of taxation, not only on property, profit and income, but on the general turnover of all enterprises and establishments. As a result of these high taxes, many small merchants and artisans find their business endangered by the gradual lessening of their operating capital which approaches confiscation.
Merchants and artisans of Krasnystaw, in a protest meeting, decided to ask the religious authorities to declare a fast day to ask divine mercy for relief. The meeting also decided to send a delegation to Warsaw to plead with the Central Government to reduce the high taxes.
