Addressing the third annual Conference on Adult Education at the Community House of Congregation Emanu-El, Dr. Salo Baron, of the faculty of political science of Columbia University, said that “the over-emphasis on “Americanization” is no longer justified. The Jews of the United States have a rare opportunity, a unique opportunity perhaps, to achieve a new synthesis of Jewish and Western culture during the present century. An opportunity of this kind is also a great obligation toward both world Jewry and the American people.”
Rabbi Isaac Landman, of Temple Beth Elehim, Brooklyn, chairman of the Adult Education Committee, said, in introducing Dr. Baron, “Judaism cannot be perpetuated any more than civilization can be developed merely through the education of our children and adolescents. The best of such education cannot carry over into adulthood. Adults must be retaught, from an adult approach, in the religion, history, literature, idealism and aspirations of our fathers.”
