The resignation of the Finnish Minister of Social Welfare, Karl August Fagerholm, in protest at the cabinet’s decision to turn over to the Gestapo foreign Jews who are being held in concentration camps on the Island of Hogland in the Gulf of Finland, was reported today from Helsinki.
The Helsinki radio announced that Mr. Fagorholm has resigned for ”personal reasons.” This is interpreted here as an indication that the Finnish cabinet has finally acceeded to the Nazi request for the surrender of the Jews, since Mr. Fagenholm had stated earlier that he would quit if the German demand were not rejected. Among the Jewish internees are reported to be several who fled from Norway to Finland to escape deportation. The incarceration of foreign Jews in Finland began some months ago.
