The Nowysacz Jewish community, practically destroyed by the heavy floods which recently swept over Poland, today appealed for help through the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. The appeal asks for immediate assistance for 350 Jewish families now homeless as a result of the flood. Many houses are completely destroyed, the appeal states, adding that the loss exceeds 1,000,000 zlotys.
Other Jewish communities in Poland also appealed to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency to broadcast their appeals for food and clothing for the sorely needed stricken Jewish flood victims. Even formerly well-to-do merchants, it is pointed out, are now utterly dependent on charity.
The exact number of Jewish dead as a result of the flood, said to be large, is still officially unestablished. Jewish bodies are still being found in the flood swollen rivers. Three unidentified Jewish corpses were found in the Vistula river today near Warsaw. It is thought that they were carried down the river all the way from Galicia.
