Avraham Harman, Israel’s former Ambassador to the United States, was elected President of the Hebrew University, it was announced here today. He succeeds Eliahu Elath and is the University’s fourth president. Sam Rothberg was elected chairman of the Hebrew University’s Board of Governors.
Mr. Rothberg, who is chairman of the American Friends of the Hebrew University in the United States, announced a surprise gift of $1 million to the University from Max M. Low, a New York industrialist and philanthropist. The sum will go toward a new research laboratory and a garden to be named for the benefactor’s parents. Mr. Low, who lives in Mamaroneck, New York, has been active in many charities, particularly those connected with medical research.
At ceremonies here last night, the Hebrew University conferred honorary doctorates on an American, an Italian and two Israelis for outstanding work in their fields. The recipients were Prof. Albert Neuberger, of the United States, who was cited for his research in biology and biochemistry; Dr. Augusto Levy, of Italy, for his work in uniting the Jewish community there after World War II; Prof. Gershom Sholem, of Israel, for his contributions toward making Kabbala studies a recognized discipline, and Caddish Luz, Speaker of the Knesset (Parliament) who was honored for conducting Israel’s legislative assembly “with wisdom and understanding.” Attending the ceremonies as a special guest was 84-year-old Joseph Levy, a New York clothing manufacturer who was present at the Hebrew University opening on Mt. Scopus 43 years ago.
