France’s chief rabbi said he is opposed to legislation banning the wearing of religious insignia in public schools. “I understand that the government wants to ban the Muslim scarf in certain conditions such as on ID cards. But wearing a scarf in a public school doesn’t shock me anymore than a cross does,” Joseph Sitruk said in an interview to be published in Friday’s Le Monde newspaper.
