Maj. Gen. Maurice Rose, whose death in action was announced by the War Department yesterday, was shot by a German tankman after he had already surrendered and was taking off his gun to hand it over to his captors, it was learned here today. The killing occurred last Saturday.
En route to a portion of his Third armored Division which had become cut off from the rest of the unit, Gen. Rose and his party ran into a German tank column. they attempted to escape, but were halted by a Nazi Tiger tank. The general and his aide got out of their jeep and surrendered. As Gen. Rose unbuckled his holster, he was shot. His aide and the jeep driver jumped into a ditch and eventually returned to their lines. Armored units which returned to the spot later found the general’s body.
